Alan B Downie

Alan is a Consulting Engineer in Broadcast Engineering and Operations with special interests in Digital and HDTV broadcasting.

A graduate of Strathclyde University in Glasgow, he has worked in broadcasting for over 40 years with both the BBC and as an independant consultant. He has worked for the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (now Public Media Alliance) as their Broadcast Engineering Consultant with many of their broadcasters, advising and assisting them with their transition to digital broadcasting. He was the lead consultant for Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation for their introduction of digital broadcasting and a regular Chairman and contributer to the Digital Broadcast Switchover Forums in Johnnesburg, SA.

Alan has travelled widely, lecturing, advising and training on modern broadcast technology. He has lectured at many events around the world and has organised and chaired seminars and international conferences in various places including IBC Amsterdam, Brussels (for EU), Accra (for Ghanaian government) Johannesburg, New Delhi, Barbados, Antigua&Barbuda, Trinidad&Tobago. Alan has provided training courses for broadcast engineers in many countries and has written and tutored several online courses.

Alan has particular interests in HDTV / UHDTV big screen events stretching back more than 20 years when he engineered the first public demonstration of big screen HDTV in Scotland.

Alan Downie is a BSc Honours graduate of the University of Strathclyde; a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, MIET; a registered European Engineer, EurEng.

In 2019, Alan stepped back from his Consultancy and Training work to focus more on other projects
